Four Research-Proven Ways to Help Induce Labor Naturally

Hello, beautiful mamas! 🌸

As you approach the final stretch of your pregnancy, you might be feeling a whirlwind of emotions – excitement, anticipation, and perhaps a bit of impatience as you eagerly await the arrival of your little one.

In Western culture, we want control. Toward the end of your pregnancy, you may be provided the option of an induction.  When deciding on an induction versus waiting for natural to begin naturally, consider all of the information.  My tip is to embrace the surprise of when your baby decides to come (as long as your baby and you are healthy of course.)  I know, this is so hard.  Your baby and body have reasons why labor has not begun yet.

Remember: Your baby doesn’t know the calendar or the number of weeks he/she is! With that said, it’s completely natural to wonder if there are gentle, natural ways to encourage labor to begin. Fortunately, there are several research-proven methods that can help, all while keeping you and your baby safe and comfortable.

1. Walking and Movement🚶🏽‍♀️

One of the simplest and most effective ways to encourage labor is through gentle movement. Walking can help your baby move into the optimal position for birth, applying gentle pressure to your cervix and encouraging it to dilate. This doesn’t mean you need to engage in strenuous exercise; a peaceful walk in your neighborhood or a stroll around your home can do wonders.

Benefits:

  • Helps position the baby correctly
  • Encourages cervical dilation
  • Boosts mood and energy levels

Tip: Listen to your body. If you feel tired, take a break and rest. The goal is to stay active without overexerting yourself.

2. Nipple Stimulation👅

Gently stimulating your nipples can release oxytocin, the hormone that triggers contractions. You can try this manually (with or without your partner!) or with the help of a breast pump. It’s a natural way to encourage your body to begin the labor process. By the way, this could lead to sex which is another great natural way to induce labor! Maybe you don’t want that at all, that’s quite okay too! This is all about you and what you want. For informational purposes only: sex releases oxytocin and prostaglandins in semen, which softens the cervix. It also can reduce the risk of tearing during childbirth as another way to practice ‘perineal massage'.

Benefits:

  • Promotes the release of oxytocin
  • Encourages contractions
  • Can be done comfortably at home

Tip: Start with gentle stimulation and take breaks as needed. If you experience any discomfort or strong contractions, stop and consult your healthcare provider.

3. Foods🍍

Would you believe that eating dates can be a helpful ally in preparing your body for labor? Research suggests that consuming dates in the weeks leading up to your due date can help soften the cervix and increase the likelihood of spontaneous labor.

Benefits:

  • Promotes cervical ripening
  • Provides natural energy and nutrients
  • Delicious and easy to incorporate into your diet

Things To Try:

  • Eating dates
  • Eating pineapples

Tip: Aim to eat 6-8 dates per day starting from 36 weeks of pregnancy. Enjoy them as a snack, add them to smoothies, or incorporate them into your meals.

4. Acupressure and Acupuncture

These traditional Chinese medicine techniques have been used for centuries to encourage labor. By applying pressure to specific points on your body, acupressure and acupuncture can help stimulate uterine activity and promote the onset of labor.

Benefits:

  • Encourages uterine contractions
  • Can help alleviate discomfort and stress
  • Safe when performed by a certified practitioner

Tip: Consult with a certified acupuncturist who specializes in prenatal care. They can guide you on the best points to target and ensure the techniques are safe for you and your baby.

Final Thoughts:

Always remember to consult with your healthcare provider before trying any new methods to ensure they are safe for you and your baby. Each pregnancy is unique, and what works for one mama might not work for another. Trust your body and this natural process – your little one will arrive when the time is right.

You are doing an amazing job, mama! Embrace these final moments of pregnancy and cherish the journey. Your baby will be in your arms soon, and all the anticipation will be worth it.  Sending you all the love and strength as you near this beautiful milestone.

With warm wishes and compassion,
Jenny 🌺
